SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sanford Pentagon 13U boys’ basketball team will display its talent in Westfield, Ind., this week, having qualified for the U.S. Open Basketball Championships.
This tournament will bring in teams from all over the country. It's organized by USA Basketball, the governing body of youth basketball in America.
“It is a great opportunity for this young team to see the talent level on a national scale," said Pat Coughlin, coordinator of the Sanford POWER Basketball Academy. "In addition, just for them to experience a prestigious tournament like this at a young age is amazing. They will take back this experience and help to further improve their game."
The Pentagon team earned a spot in this event by winning a June qualifying event - held in their home gym.
Starting Thursday, the boys will begin pool play. They'll face competition from Michigan, West Virginia, Illinois and Indiana. The two top teams in each of three pools will advance to the championship bracket.
The tournament is being held at the Pacers Athletic Center in suburban Indianapolis. Teams from 28 states are participating over three age divisions.
