About South Dakota
The Coyotes won the Summit League regular season title in 2016-17 for the first time since moving to the NCAA Division I level and advanced to the NIT.
The team was picked to finish second in the 2017-18 preseason conference poll. Junior guard Matt Mooney was named preseason first-team all-conference after putting up 18.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season. Junior forward Trey Burch-Manning was named preseason second-team all-conference.
USD will face two of the most storied programs in college basketball history next month, visiting Duke on Dec. 2 and UCLA on Dec. 19.
About Northern Colorado
Before moving to the NCAA Division I, the Bears spent plenty of time in this region as members of the North Central Conference from 1979-2003.
The Bears were tabbed fourth in the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches poll and seventh in the media poll. Top returning players including all-conference guard Jordan Davis and reigning Big Sky defensive player of the year Jonah Radebaugh. They have five freshmen in the mix, too.
Coach Jeff Linder is in second season at UNC. He spent the six before that at Boise State, as an assistant and associate head coach. Previously, Lindner held those same roles at the University of San Francisco and had a stint at Weber State, where he recruited current NBA star Damian Lillard.
About Southern Miss
Southern Miss is coached by Doc Sadler, who joined the program with nearly 300 wins to his credit as a head coach. That included holding the top jobs at Nebraska and UTEP. He’s also been an assistant at Kansas, Arkansas, Texas Tech, Iowa State and Arizona State.
Sadler assistant Clarence Weatherspoon is another recognizable name. He starred at Southern Miss then spent 13 seasons in the NBA. His son, Clay, is a sophomore guard on the team.
The Golden Eagles were tabbed 10th in the Conference USA preseason poll. They feature two promising new faces in transfers Tyree Griffin (Oklahoma State) and Dominic Magee (Grand Canyon), who sat out last season. Both played significant roles during a preseason exhibition tour in the Bahamas.
About Youngstown State
The Penguins have a new coach this year in Jerrod Calhoun, who spent the previous five seasons at NCAA Division II Fairmont State. Calhoun led FSU to the Elite Eight last season – right here on Heritage Court.
YSU will be led by senior Cameron Morse, a returning all-conference and all-region selection. The 6-foot-3 guard led the Horizon League in scoring last season and finished second as a freshman. He entered his final campaign with 1,421 points and 153 3-pointers.
The Penguins return three starters from last year and have been picked to finish seventh – with one first-place vote – in the Horizon League preseason poll.
Sunday’s game between South Dakota and Youngstown State will be carried live by Fox Sports North.
Use the hashtag #PentagonShowcase throughout the weekend to be a part of the conversation. There will also be special Snapchat filters available at the Pentagon during the games.

The cornerstone of the Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is the Sanford Pentagon, a 160,000-square-foot, five-sided facility featuring nine basketball courts, including the 1950s/1960s-inspired Heritage Court. The venue combines state-of-the-art amenities—including high-definition video boards and executive suites—with period-specific finishes that are a nod to the nostalgic days of basketball. The 3,200-seat Pentagon is home to Sanford POWER Basketball Academy, Sanford POWER Volleyball Academy, the NBA G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournament and the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
Parking and accommodations
Parking at the Sanford Pentagon is available on the east, west and north side of the facility. Need to eat? The Pentagon includes full-service concession stands, and Will’s Training Table is a short walk across the street. Want to stay close to the arena? The Fairfield Inn & Suites is also across the street. The venue also has an official team store and several ATM stations.
The South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame calls the Sanford Pentagon home. Visitors can enjoy the free exhibit that includes historical photos, records and memorabilia. In fact, the entire facility is trek to a different era. The Pentagon took great care to include old photos, jerseys and mementos throughout the venue. One of this year’s new elements highlights former high school championship teams. That’s available for viewing on the second level.
