SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of South Dakota and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s basketball programs have finalized plans for a Nov. 11 regular-season game at the Sanford Pentagon. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
South Dakota played the first NCAA Division I women’s basketball game in the Pentagon in 2013, falling to Drake 89-81 in a November overtime contest.
South Dakota, which finished 32-6 in 2015-16, is coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Coyotes won the Women’s National Invitation Tournament and secured their second consecutive Summit League regular-season title. South Dakota hired Dawn Plitzuweit as its new head coach in April after Amy Williams accepted the top job at the University of Nebraska.
“It is an incredible opportunity to start our season at a great facility within an hour of Vermillion,” said Plitzuweit. “The Pentagon staff has done a fantastic job of bringing major programs to the Midwest from across the country. Plus, the community support of women’s basketball has been astounding in this region, from the record-setting attendance at the Summit League Tournament to winning the bid to host an NCAA Regional last season! We couldn't be more excited about this chance to play at the Pentagon!"
A member of the Ohio Valley Conference, SIUE went 18-13 a year ago and advanced to the semifinals of its league tournament. Paula Buscher enters her fifth season as the head coach of the Cougars.
“We are looking forward to playing USD in the Pentagon,” said Buscher. “I have heard great things about this facility, and I am excited to get the opportunity to take our team here to play in this venue. USD is coming off a great season and I know Dawn will have her team ready to compete.”
South Dakota has won five of the six meetings between the two schools. They last played on March 1, 2012, when South Dakota topped SIUE 64-61 in Vermillion.
Tickets go on sale Oct. 1 at ticketmaster.com and the Pentagon box office.
