SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball program returns to the Sanford Pentagon on Nov. 5 to face No. 20 Saint Mary’s in a regular season game at 8 p.m.
The Wisconsin Badgers, a member of the Big Ten, are coming off a 23-11 season, finishing fourth in the conference. The Badgers lost to Oregon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season. Head coach Greg Gard is in his fifth season with the Badgers. He owns the third-highest winning percentage in UW history in only his first four years.
Wisconsin assistant coach and former Badgers forward Joe Krabbenhoft has close ties to Sioux Falls, graduating from Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School and eventually playing for the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Krabbenhoft is the son of Sanford Health president and CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft.
About Saint Mary’s
The Saint Mary’s Gaels finished last season with a 22-12 record, defeating No. 1 Gonzaga to win the WCC Championship. Last year, the Gaels lost to Villanova in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Randy Bennett is in his 19th season with the Gaels. He has earned three WCC Coach of the Year honors and his 414 wins are the most all time at Saint Mary’s in men’s basketball.
Meeting up again
This marks Wisconsin’s second trip to the Pentagon and the first for Saint Mary’s. This will be the third meeting between Wisconsin and SMC, with the series tied 1-1. The two teams last played in 1976 at Wisconsin.
Honoring Howard Moore
This summer Wisconsin assistant coach Howard Moore lost his wife and daughter in a car accident. Shortly after the accident, he suffered a major medical emergency and will not coach this season.
Moore is passionate about helping kids, having recently started a non-profit in his hometown of Chicago. Sanford Health is honoring Coach Moore’s work by hosting kids from the local Boys and Girls Club to the game. The kids will get tickets to the game, dinner and a t-shirt. Also, Miss South Dakota, Amber Hulse, is singing the national anthem on behalf of the Boys and Girls Club.
Schools from more than a dozen NCAA Division I conferences have visited the Pentagon in its six-year history. The Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, SEC, and Pac 12 have all sent teams to Sioux Falls

The cornerstone of the Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is the Sanford Pentagon, a 160,000-square-foot, five-sided facility featuring nine basketball courts, including the 1950s/1960s-inspired Heritage Court. The venue combines state-of-the-art amenities—including high-definition video boards and executive suites—with period-specific finishes as a nod to the nostalgic days of basketball. The 3,200-seat Pentagon is home to Sanford POWER Basketball Academy, Sanford POWER Volleyball Academy, the NBA G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournament and the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
Parking and Accommodations
Parking at the Sanford Pentagon is available on the east, west and north side of the facility. Need to eat? The Pentagon has a variety of options for food and beverages, including several upgrades for the 2019-20 season. Check out Slam Dunk: all your favorites, including pizza, nachos, hot dogs and popcorn; Jump Shot: this new spot features coffee and espresso drinks plus a full-service bar; Sixth Man Sweets: satisfy your sweet tooth with candy, ice cream, Icees and cotton candy. The venue also has an official team store and several ATM stations.
The South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame calls the Sanford Pentagon home. Visitors can enjoy the free exhibit that includes historical photos, records and memorabilia. In fact, the entire facility is a trek to a different era. The Pentagon took great care to include old photos, jerseys and mementos throughout the entire venue. One of last year’s new elements highlights former high school championship teams that are available for viewing on the second level.
