SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sanford Pentagon is one of nine sites nationwide selected to host a USA Basketball Coach Academy Presented by Nike. The event, designed to provide training for youth basketball coaches, visits Sioux Falls June 24-25.

Sioux Falls joins Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, New York City, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Memphis and Houston as host cities.

USA Basketball Coach Academies provide live training for a USA Basketball Coach License, on- and off-the-court presentations from respected guest speakers, Nike/USA Basketball gift items, catered meals and networking time. The events are also designed to provide coaches valuable insight and education on how to teach the game of basketball to young people and how to implement fun, safe and feasible programming throughout organizations like schools, recreation centers, clubs and leagues.

“Sanford Health’s vision for the Pentagon was to foster an environment for the development of the game of basketball at all levels, especially youth,” said Jesse Smith, executive director of operations for the Pentagon. “USA Basketball’s selection of our facility to host this prestigious academy has turned that vision into a reality. When you consider basketball on a global level, USA Basketball is the gold standard.”

Registration for the Sioux Falls academy is open. Early bird pricing of $150 is available through March 31; registration then increases to $185.

Don Showalter, USA Basketball’s coach development director and men’s junior national team head coach, is among the list of guest speakers.

Additional speakers and presenters include:

  • Steve Prohm, Iowa State University head men's basketball coach
  • Brian Jones, University of North Dakota head men's basketball coach
  • Pat Sullivan, former men's college basketball head coach
  • Molly Hornbeck, South Sioux City High School head girls basketball coach
  • Allan Bertram, Sanford Pentagon Basketball Academy director
  • Tom Billeter, Augustana University head men's basketball coach
  • Dr. Anthony Pappas, Waterloo West High School, director of athletics and head girls basketball coach
  • Ras Vanderloo, Sioux City East High School head boys basketball coach

During breakouts, coaches have a choice of sessions to attend based on topics that most interest them and best suit their program or team needs.
